Alexandroupolis is a coastal city with a population of about 38.000. It is the capital of the Prefecture of Evros. It is connected by plane with Athens, via its airport, and by road and rail with Thessaloniki which is about 330 kilometres away. It is also connected by ferry with the islands of the northeast Aegean, via its port.
